Synopsis

Written and directed by Nile Saulter and based on a concept by Shamar Watt, Summon follows Suno, a young dancer torn between his Jamaican roots and life in Miami, USA.. The story intricately weaves together past and present, as Suno grapples with questions of identity and belonging. In the past, we witness the Maroon tradition of hunting wild boar, paralleling Suno’s modern-day journey. Disconnected from organized religion, Suno seeks solace elsewhere, leading him back to Jamaica to reconnect with his heritage. Amidst the vibrant culture of the island, Suno learns about the legacy of the Maroons and their resistance against oppression. Through encounters with family and strangers, he confronts his own demons and discovers the true meaning of freedom and community. Summon is a poignant exploration of culture and memory, leaving viewers with a renewed appreciation for the echoes of the past that shape our present and future.

About the Director

Nile Saulter is a Jamaican director whose short films have screened at film festivals, gallery shows & special events all over the world. He’s created spots for brands such as Puma, Levi’s, Sephora, Gatorade, Digicel & Red Stripe – while also crafting music videos for Popcaan, Tarrus Riley & Jesse Royal to name a few. Though based in Jamaica, he’s done extensive commercial work in Dubai, UAE over the past few years. Nile is currently in pre-production on his first feature film, an adaptation of the Caribbean literary classic Escape to Last Man Peak.
